Category:Lawsuits Category:Legal procedure Category:Ecuadorian lawSt. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (Philadelphia) St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church is a historic church in the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The parish building is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture, constructed from 1911 to 1916. History St. John the Evangelist was founded in 1892 as a mission church of the Holy Comforter Society. The cornerstone of the current church building was laid on August 21, 1911. The structure was dedicated on December 21, 1916 by Cardinal James Gibbons, Archbishop of Philadelphia. At the time of the church's construction, Olney was a large, thriving working class suburb of Philadelphia, along the Main Line. Many Irish immigrants lived in the neighborhood, and the churches of St. Mary's in the neighboring community of Ardmore and the Church of the Holy Comforter in West Philadelphia were visible on the horizon. However, Olney was not racially integrated. The first Catholic priest assigned to the parish was Father Carroll, a white priest who worked in a clerical position at the church. The parish continued to grow in the 1950s and 1960s, and its first rectory was built to house the priests. When Fr. Carroll retired in 1967, the parish purchased the rectory from the Society of the Holy Comforter for $350,000, and the Society's property on Drexel Avenue, which had been the main rectory, was turned over to the parish. The present sanctuary was built on the site. A fire damaged the narthex, vestibule, and bell tower in June 2008. In the process of construction of a new church building, the external fabric was covered with a thermal reflective coating and the entire building was insulated and airtightened. The new church building, which was designed by architect Robert F. Spires, was completed in 2011. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 3, 2007. Architecture St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church is a Romanesque Revival building. The exterior of the sanctuary is brick and stone. The church has an English gable roof with simple stone tracery.
